When I did this list of romantic movies, you have to have understanding, that the term Romance is a personal thing. Romance and love can be so many things for everyone of us. These movies are the love stories that move me. My mind has a romantic mind of its own.
Top 10 (starting from the last on the list)
10 Intersection (1994)
The most amazing part of this “threesome love story” is how a man actually accomplishes the impossible task of giving his true love to two women. Richard Gere is great. It is a bit of a drama story. And the romance is perhaps not big, but the troubles of love deeply show in this movie.
9 Lost in translation (2003)
One of the greatest movies ever filmed. Sofia Coppola did a outstanding job filming a story, without actually feeling that it is a movie. And she did it without a shaky camera. The story is really about a love story that DOESN’T happen. Both are married, and both only share a glance of something that never happens.
8 Pretty woman (1990)
Say what you want. But this story about a hooker and a john is some of the most romantic stories I have ever seen. So sure she wants money, and he has money, but the love goes deeper. Of course, you have to consider if she would still love him if not the money. :)
7 Casablanca (1942)
A classic love story. And to be honest, it is not a love story completely. But somehow love and romance is involved in such a complicated way that you just can’t have a top 10 list of most romantic stories without this one on it.
6 Road home (1999)
This is probably not known by a lot of people. A chinese movie about a girl (Ziyi Zhang) who falls in love with a teacher, and this movie really shows how far a village girl would go for someone she loves and hardly knows. There is this scene in the end, when we see her as a old woman remembering how she met him, and I honestly start to weep when I hear her trembling voice.
5 Shakespeake in love (1998)
I love this movie. But mostly the part of romance and inspiration that he gets from a impossible love that occurs. Great actors (Geoffrey Rush, Tom Wilkinson, Joseph Fiennes), great soundtrack, and I love the Shakespearean flow of the movie.
4 Titanic (1997)
Well, few have NOT seen this movie. And Forget the boat, and the epic sad scenes. The love story between Rose and Jack must be some of the greatest romance in a movie. Hard to keep the tears back in the end of the movie when Rose either dreams or has gone to heaven.
3 Becoming Jane (2007)
Sort of a Shakespeare in love kind of movie (hope they will one day do the same thing with Kafka). About Jane Austen (played briljantly by Anne Hathaway), and how she was inspired to write novels. Great movie overall. But the love story is so sad and beautiful.
2 Garden state (2004)
A movie about Large (Zach Brafman, from Scrubs, who also directed and wrote this movie), a failed young actor who is troubled by depression, and returns to his hometown for his mothers funeral. First time without medication, meets old friends and a new friend (Natalie Portman) who gives him something to feel about.
1 At first sight (1999)
So this movie with Val Kilmer and Mira Sovino is about a blind man who meets a girl who finds a miracle doctor to fix his eye sight. Afraid to be disapointed, he finds refuge in love and agress to do this procedure. It is a great movie, about love, about fear and even about love between people. This movie makes me really weepy inside. Highly recommended.
