Article: Japan is drowning

So I take it that you have seen those horrible videos and pictures of cars and buildings being drowned in Japan.

A Tsunami?
Earthquake?
Well, it is terrible.
Or is it?

But I have these disasters on my mind lately. We seem to always be affected emotionally by these things because media coverage is bigger, faster and more adapted to events.

And I think that it is important that no matter how terrible the disaster, we need to remember a very important thing.

That we react very emotionally to BIG events, and somehow our logical minds assumes that the bigger the event the bigger the tragedy. I am not saying this to upset anyone, quite the opposite. We really should NOT react that much to these kinds of events. Because they are not tragic.

Let me explain. They say 1000s of people have allready drowned in japan these last few days. And we somehow are chocked by it, because this somehow is a tragedy right?

Well, there are more than 200 000 individual drownings EVERY year. It is the most common accidental death in the world.

My point is this. Why would it be more tragic if 1000s of people drown in one day, than 1000 people in different times, and places?

Think about it. Why do we react so strongly?

My heart does NOT go out to all those people in Japan. Because I don't know them anymore than all those people that drown every year. And I wonder, does this somehow make me a evil person?

Of course not. People die EVERY day. From all kinds of reasons. And the death of these people in Japan is horrible, but no more than any other typical death.

Every day someone is raped, murdered, drowned, killed in a war, starves to death, dies from aids, dies from cancer, dies from hearth attack etc. etc.

The media somehow wants you to react to this event, as if it is something out of the ordinary. Any day now, they will ask you to send money to save all those people. (and why not? It is for a good cause).

But let me end this post with this question, why do you feel so sad for these people, and think about donating money for it, and you do not do anything for anyone else who dies?

Please don't hate me for being honest about my thoughts and feelings... (I really hate the media)

ps.
By the way, I wanted to ask my readers to do me a huge favor. There is a "facebook fanpage", and if you like this blog, please click on it. It is sort of a way for me to see if people like the blog or not.
